Materials About Issues Pertaining to the Inner-City

Ministering in the inner-city is not something to be taken lightly. There are many good books and resources that are helpful for people who are new to the inner-city or who have even lived in the city their whole lives.

*Beyond Charity is an excellent book written by John Perkins. This quote from the book sums it up, "It is time for the church, yes, the whole church, to take a whole gospel on a whole mission to the whole world. It is time for us to prove that purpose of the gospel is to reconcile alienated people to God and to each other, across racial, cultural, social, and economic barriers. "

*Restoring At-Risk Communities by author John Perkins. Here is a short blurb from this book: Ministering to an at-risk community is not easy, but committed Christians with a vision for Christ's redemptive plan can make a lasting difference. John Perkins writes, "The desperate problems in American's inner cities will not be resolved without a strong commitment and risky action on the part of ordinary Christians with heroic faith."

*John M. Perkins the founder and chairman of Christian Community Development Association and he has also helped start church based ministries among the poor in Mississippi and California. You can learn more about CCDA at http://www.ccda.org.

*Help, I'm An Urban Youth Worker by author Ginger Sinsabaugh. This book gives information for people who are starting urban ministry including volunteers, Sunday school teachers, seminary students, pastors, and all others.

*City Lights by author George Gallup, Jr. gives snapshots of different inner-city ministries that are on the cutting edge.

*Reconciliation Blues by Edward Gilbreath is a book about a black Evangelical's Inside view of White Christianity. There are many thought provoking ideas in this book. It is a good book for those who have been in inner-city ministry for awhile.

*Ministries of Mercy by Tim Keller is a book about mercy ministry and how it is a vital part of every believers life.  He gives scripture to support this idea and also a lot of pratical advice.

*On Being Black and Reformed by Anthony J. Carter.  Here are a few words from Anthony that describe the book: My goal," writes Anthony J. Carter, is to redeem and reform our understanding of "the Black American experience through the most legitimate lens available to us—theology. And the most legitimate theological perspective through which to attain this goal is the biblically based and historically grounded Reformed perspective.
